Interview with Jamaican Olympian Devon Harris.
I had the pleasure of meeting up with Devon Harris in London,
whilst he was here for a series of talks and book signings.
Devon Harris may not be the household name associated
with Jamaica’s leading athletes such as Usain Bolt or
Asafa Powell.
Devon Harris and the achievements of his teammates
were immortalised in the Hollywood film “Cool Runnings”.
He was part of Jamaica’s first Bobsled Winter Olympic team in
1988.
During the time together it was an interesting discussion talking about
Jamaica’s first time out competing in the 1948 Olympics in London.
Read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_Summer_Olympics
and learn about Arthur Wint Jamaica’s first double Olympic medalist here

We also compared the Jamaican athletics, olympians and sporting achievements
in the 80′s and 90′s compared to the current generation now. That on the track
in the 80′s and 90′s was symbolised by the sprinter Merlene Ottey see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merlene_Ottey,
also briefly spoke about the 1998 Jamaican Football team debuting at the World Cup in France,
dubbed the Reggae Boyz.
Looking at the key achievement of the Jamaican bobsled team compared to the current
crop of Jamaican athletes, Beijing 2008 will be remembered for breaking records and the
Jamaican Bobsled 1988 team for breaking boundaries in sport, by doing the unthinkable
by securing an Olympic place, from a country whose climate didn’t have the facilities
or environment to suitable for winter sport.
But through self determination, motivation and sporting ability were able to show
that no sport was out of reach for Jamaicans.
Devon Harris recounts his experiences and feelings about that 1988 Olympics
games in a BBC interview listen to the audio cast here.
